Starting a new exercise routine can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Group fitness can be a perfect option for adding variety to your routine, while also ensuring a well-rounded approach to exercise. But with so many different classes and activities available, how do you choose the right one for you? Here are a few steps to help you find the right group exercise class for your needs.

Ask yourself key questions and set your goals.

Take some time to reflect on your preferences and limitations. Consider the following:

  • Fitness level: Are you at a beginner, intermediate, or advanced fitness level?
  • Interests: Do you enjoy high-intensity workouts, dance, water activities, cycling or something else entirely?
  • Time commitment: How much time can you realistically dedicate to exercise each week?
  • Personal goals: Do you want to lose weight, build muscle, improve your cardiovascular health, or simply have fun?

Research your options.

View our class calendar or download the center mobile app to explore all the group exercise options we have available for all fitness levels. Consider the following factors when choosing a class:

September is National Yoga Month. This is a great time to start your yoga journey. Yoga can help improve your physical and mental health. In addition, many individuals who participate in yoga regularly reduce stress, improve flexibility, and build strength. If you’re thinking about trying yoga for the first time, here are a few tips on how to prepare:

1. Explore yoga options at the center. There are many different types of yoga, so it’s important to find one that’s right for you. Some popular types of yoga include hatha yoga, vinyasa yoga, and yin yoga. You can explore the different classes we offer on our group exercise schedule or talk to one of our yoga instructors.

2. Have a positive attitude. All fitness levels are welcome to try yoga. Everyone’s abilities and goals are different. Our instructors will provide instruction and modify poses to find what works for you. Try not to compare yourself to others. Relax and trust your judgment.

3. Dress comfortably. Wear loose-fitting clothing that you can move around in easily. You may also want to bring a yoga mat, a water bottle and a towel.

4. Eat a light meal before class. You don’t want to be too full or too hungry when you’re doing yoga. Aim to eat a light meal about 2-3 hours before class.

5. Arrive early. This will give you time to get settled, warm up,  and meet your instructor.

6. Listen to your body. Don’t push yourself too hard in your first yoga class. If you feel pain, stop and modify the pose.

7. Have fun! Yoga is a great way to relax and de-stress. So relax, breathe deeply, and enjoy the experience.

Go for a walk after dinner
After sharing your meal, go for a family walk outdoors to explore the neighborhood. For even more fun, take the family pet along. You can even grab your bikes and spend an hour riding outdoors before turning in for the night. This gives the family quality time together minus the screen time.

Get the whole family involved with yard work
Whether it’s mowing the lawn, raking leaves, shoveling snow, or pulling weeds. Yard work goes more quickly when you get everyone involved. Plus, work turns into play when you jump into a pile of leaves or build a snowman.

Create backyard game time
Grab some hula hoops, a jump rope, skates, Frisbee®, soccer ball and more to take fun and games outdoors. Have a friendly competition with family (and friends) or splash around with water games. The sun, fresh air and fun will motivate everyone to get moving and burn calories.

Exercise outdoors
Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi and more exercises can be done on a mat outdoors to support the physical and mental health of the entire family. Lead by example by inviting your family to participate in family workouts.

We are happy to announce that beginning Wednesday, June 10, Chelsea Wellness Center will be officially in the improving phase of the MI Safe Start Plan. We will be offering outdoor group exercise classes that are available to members and non-members!

OUTDOOR GROUP EXERCISE PROCEDURES:
Our class schedule is available here. In following the guidelines outlined in MI Safe Start Plan, classes sizes will be limited, please refer to the class schedule. Classes are open to the community. Therefore, pre-registration is required for all classes. 

To register and pay for class, individuals will need to call (734) 214-0220 the day before class from 9am–12pm (call on Friday for Monday classes). You will be registered in the order of your calls, if your call is not answered please leave a message and we will call you back.

The cost of each class is $8 and can be charged to your house account or paid by credit card. We are no longer accepting cash or checks at the center. Please arrive at the center 10 minutes prior to class and socially distance at the outdoor location of class.

SPECIAL NOTES

  • Class will be cancelled due to inclement weather and refund provided
  • Waiver will need to be signed and COVID-19 self-assessment questions completed before participating in class
  • Please bring your own towel and water
  • Building will be closed
  • Mask is not required

 
We are excited that we can offer some fitness alternatives for you as of June 10 and look forward to when we can begin the next Phase .

There are a variety of group exercises classes to choose from at Chelsea Wellness Center. If you are trying out group exercise classes for the first time, it may be hard to select which class is best for you. Here are a few tips on how you can choose the perfect group exercise class for your fitness routine:

Establish your fitness goals before choosing a class

To choose a class that is right for you, you must establish your fitness goals. Classes may focus on cardio, strength training, use bikes, yoga or Pilate’s equipment, or incorporate dance. There are also classes that can train you for athletic events.

 

Learn your fitness level

Group exercises classes also range from beginner to advanced levels. If you are unsure about your fitness level, an assessment with a fitness specialist can help. After a FREE Polar BodyAge® fitness assessment, you can choose the appropriate group exercise class.

Research the class setting
