Learn to hula hoop, dance, and create your own flows!

In this one-of-a-kind 5-week course, ACE-approved Hoola Fit* instructor Heather Gamin facilitates space to explore the benefits of hula hoop dancing. This low-impact workout is easy on your joints. It is also a great way to tone your core muscles and improve your overall fitness. Hula hooping is a fun and creative activity that can help you reduce stress and improve your mood.

In the following classes, Heather will teach you the basics of waist hooping, bodywork, and flow art. You will learn how to connect movement, dance with your hoop, and create your own flows. By the end of the program, you will be a confident hula hoop flow artist!

  • In the first class, students will learn to make hula hoops and be able to take home their very own personalized hula hoop. We will go over some of the benefits of hula hooping, as well as troubleshoot the issues that many individuals have when first starting out.
  • As we move into our second class, Heather utilizes her knowledge as a licensed massage therapist to teach the importance of good body mechanics as we continue the journey of waist-hooping and gain greater control over our hoops.
  • The third class presents students with creative new ways to explore movement, as we do on bodywork.
  • As we head into week 4, get ready to experience flow art. We will learn how to connect movement and discover how to dance with our hoops.
  • As we head into the final class of the series, we will be working on how to build our own hula hoop flows as well as learn a few advanced hula hoop moves to add to your hula hoop library of movement as you continue on your journey of your own as a hula hoop flow artist.

September is National Yoga Month. This is a great time to start your yoga journey. Yoga can help improve your physical and mental health. In addition, many individuals who participate in yoga regularly reduce stress, improve flexibility, and build strength. If you’re thinking about trying yoga for the first time, here are a few tips on how to prepare:

1. Explore yoga options at the center. There are many different types of yoga, so it’s important to find one that’s right for you. Some popular types of yoga include hatha yoga, vinyasa yoga, and yin yoga. You can explore the different classes we offer on our group exercise schedule or talk to one of our yoga instructors.

2. Have a positive attitude. All fitness levels are welcome to try yoga. Everyone’s abilities and goals are different. Our instructors will provide instruction and modify poses to find what works for you. Try not to compare yourself to others. Relax and trust your judgment.

3. Dress comfortably. Wear loose-fitting clothing that you can move around in easily. You may also want to bring a yoga mat, a water bottle and a towel.

4. Eat a light meal before class. You don’t want to be too full or too hungry when you’re doing yoga. Aim to eat a light meal about 2-3 hours before class.

5. Arrive early. This will give you time to get settled, warm up,  and meet your instructor.

6. Listen to your body. Don’t push yourself too hard in your first yoga class. If you feel pain, stop and modify the pose.

7. Have fun! Yoga is a great way to relax and de-stress. So relax, breathe deeply, and enjoy the experience.

Healthy Eating 101 – (6-week virtual series)

There’s so much information out there about what is healthy and what is not. This class will help cut through all that and get to the basics of what is a healthy diet and what you need to improve your overall health. We all know that cooking from scratch is the best way to get healthy, but it can be difficult and time consuming. Chelsea Wellness Center now offers children’s swim classes! Children who become good swimmers will not only be safer around the water, but can engage in activities, games and exercises to be happy and healthy. Our certified swim instructor Joni Jolly will teach your children how to safely swim while having fun. Swim classes will be offered every Monday for 6 weeks, April 17 – May 22.

           FEE: Members $48.00, Non-Members $66.00

Children age 6 months up to 3 years old are invited to participate in water babies and 3-5 years in Preschool Swim. Classes will be located in the warm water therapy pool. We request that the legal parent or guardian sign their children in and out when participating in Chelsea Wellness Center youth activity programs. Each class is a new challenge. The variety and enthusiasm of other members will turn exercise from a chore into a new hobby.
