From healthy snacks to juice pouches, your donations will help feed students in your area. Help us get students ready for school by donating to our back-to-school food drive. October 20-26 is National Massage Therapy Awareness Week®. Not only is massage therapy a great way to relax and unwind, it can also help alleviate unwanted muscle tension and aches and pains. If you suffer from a sore back, stress, anxiety, or other conditions, massage therapy could help to alleviate your symptoms and get you up on your feet.

Relieve Stress
Many people carry tension in their shoulders from stress. Massage therapy can help alleviate some of the physical symptoms of stress, including high blood pressure and more. Additionally, massage therapy is known to alleviate the psychological symptoms of stress as well, helping to improve your overall mental health.

Manage Lower-Back Pain
According to the American Massage Therapy Association, research has shown that regular massage therapy can help to decrease low back pain and decrease disability associated with low back pain over time. Consistent massage therapy can help to target the muscles and source of low back pain, leading to better overall well-being.

Improve Sleep
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) state that a lack of sleep is associated with a number of chronic conditions. Breast Cancer Awareness Week

Oct. 5-11 

Wear Pink, Fight Together.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we’re dedicating a week to those whose lives have been forever changed by this disease. Join us at Chelsea Wellness Center as we honor survivors and those who are living with breast cancer. Break out your pink gear as we work towards a cure together.

Between October 5 through 11, members who wear pink or a pink accessory during this week can be entered into a drawing to win a $25 center gift card. Show up for those in your life, in your community and at the Wellness Center who have been affected by this disease.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world, with over 2 million people diagnosed annually. Wherever you are, you are near someone who has been personally affected by this disease.

Why Breast Cancer Awareness?

  • Support those diagnosed with breast cancer and metastatic breast cancer. Whether you’re a breast cancer survivor, battling the disease, or have lost someone to breast cancer, October is dedicated to providing support resources to those in need.
  • Provide education about risk factors. Age, sex, reproductive history and family history of breast cancer are some of the main risk factors for breast cancer, but there are many more to look out for. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention outline other risk factors here.
  • Encourage regular breast cancer screenings. Women 40 and older should have regular breast cancer screenings. Women under 40 may need to begin screenings early, depending on their own personal risk factors.
  • Fundraise for breast cancer research. Across the world, people come together to raise money for breast cancer research to help find a cure for this disease.

The celestial event of the year, a total solar eclipse, is happening on Monday, April 8, 2024! A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. While you might be tempted to catch a glimpse between sets or during your cool-down, it’s crucial to prioritize your eye safety. Staring directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can cause permanent damage to your vision.

Your well-being is our top concern, so we wanted to share some safe viewing tips courtesy of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA):

  • Official Viewing Glasses – Invest in eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. These specially filtered glasses block harmful solar radiation, allowing you to view the eclipse safely. Always inspect your eclipse glasses or handheld viewer before use; if torn, scratched, or otherwise damaged, discard the device. Always supervise children using solar viewers. According to the American Optometric Association when viewing the eclipse, you should “Stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer before looking up. After viewing, turn away and remove your glasses or viewer — do not remove them while looking at the sun. If you normally wear eyeglasses, wear your eclipse glasses over them, or hold your handheld viewer in front of them.”
  • Skin Safety – Due to the brightness of the sun, you should consider protection of your skin as well as your eyes. If you are watching an entire eclipse, you may be in direct sunlight for hours. Remember to wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours, or more often if sweating or swimming. Wear protective clothing such as a hat, and long sleeves to prevent skin damage.
  • Hydrate – Staying hydrated is crucial when spending time outdoors under the sun. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after viewing the eclipse to avoid dehydration, which can worsen sunburns.

Remember, your eye health and skin health are essential for enjoying all your favorite fitness activities. Embrace the excitement of the eclipse while prioritizing safety.
